The convention for naming photo frame sizes is the frame size refers to the size of the photo that the frame holds. The function of the frame it to display the photo so the frame size designates this (It would be too confusing to name the frame size by its external dimension as it would give no indication of what size photo it holds ).

One of the reasons that we put our photos on display and in frames is that they remind us of the fun moments, good times and the special moments that are captured in the photos. The photos lift our mood and make us feel like we did when the photo was taken. For some reason a larger photo seems to convey more of the moment and the feelings than a small photo (it could be more detail in a larger photo?).

Traditionally magnetic frames for the refrigerator were small (for the common 6x4 snap shot) and we could put a few of these on the fridge. Now that there are larger size magnetic photo frames available (for 6x4 inch, 5x7 inch, 8x6 inch and 10x8 inch photos) we can get larger prints of our favorite photos and put them on the fridge.
